About Sitia Geopark

Sitia Geopark covers approximately 517 square kilometers in the easternmost region of Crete, Greece. It encompasses a landscape shaped by complex geological forces including significant tectonic activity, volcanic formations, and erosional processes that reveal layers dating back millions of years. The park includes extensive mountain ranges such as the Zakros and Ornon Mountains, long Mediterranean coastlines, fertile plains, and deep gorges. Ecologically, it supports a diverse range of habitats including maquis shrublands, pine forests, wetlands, and marine environments, which sustain various endemic and protected species such as the Mediterranean monk seal and the Cretan wild goat (kri-kri).

Historically, the area has been inhabited since ancient times with archaeological sites like the Minoan palace of Zakros, historic monasteries, and Venetian fortifications dotting the landscape. Recreational opportunities in Sitia Geopark focus on hiking through scenic trails, exploring caves and gorges, bird watching, marine activities along its coastline, and cultural tourism given the area's archaeological significance. The geopark is also well known for its agritourism, including olive groves and vineyards. Visitors are attracted to the blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and rich heritage, making it a unique destination on Crete for geotourism and sustainable travel.
